Responsible Renter Program

The Responsible Renter Program is a collaborative effort designed by case managers from 9 social service agencies in Spokane.  The purpose of the project is to help homeless people understand the circumstances that have led to their homelessness and learn the skills needed to become stable and to find affordable, permanent housing.

Curriculum:

  • Step One - An Initial Assessment Unit and registration providing housing coach insight to each individuals needs of the Responsible Renter Program.

  • Learning Units:

  • Finding a Home - How to find safe, affordable, housing that meets the needs and wants of an individual.

  • Money Management - Basic money management - how to budget, pay off debts, and manage personal finances.

  • Renter Rights and Responsibilities - Understanding the basic responsibilities a tenant has to maintain their living space and uphold their rental agreement.

The curriculum is designed to give participants an opportunity to learn skills and demonstrate their accomplishments in critical areas related to permanent housing. Case managers or Coaches will work with individuals as they use the curriculum. Upon completion of each phase, participants are awarded a certificate which can be presented to landlords to give evidence of their motivation and skills.

Agencies who work with individuals and families who are homeless are encouraged to become Responsible Renter Program member.  Membership will enable agencies to access curriculum materials and resources through this website.
